Why hello!

October 13, 2011

Hello all, my name is Megan and I will be a new contributor to this blog. I am so looking forward to sharing information here and getting to know everyone better. As I was pondering what my first post should be about (the most fabulous new wedding dress? an amazing bouquet? a wedding gallery in Maine?) it occurred to me that video wasn’t always the first thing that pops into my mind when I think of wedding necessities. Truthfully, when I began to plan my wedding (I just became a Mrs. on September 3rd) I wasn’t planning on having one at all. Most brides regardless of their wedding budgets have to decide to give something up and for me that was a videographer.

I apparently was not the only one. Style Me Pretty has an ongoing poll on their Facebook page right now asking their followers what their most important wedding vendor is/was. Out of 344 people 7 selected videographer. The top pick was photography with 228 votes followed by venue selection and a wedding planner.

Like I said, I was perfectly fine with leaving out a video. Sometimes wedding memories make me think of wheels of slides and a captive audience or a 3 hour long and terribly filmed home movie of literally every single second of the wedding. All of this changed for me when I stumbled upon Tower Films. Watching their wedding films made me get a lump in my throat. I felt like I was there. I could touch the tablecloths and admire all the little details that brides work so hard on and are often missing 10 years later when they want to relive everything. I could see the tiny flowers on the bride’s bodice and I laughed at the groom’s funny socks. I could watch the bride dance with her father in motion and see him try to retain his composure the entire time. I did not miss the sly glance that the bride and groom shared as he reached for her garter. I was overjoyed as the bride and groom made their getaway and waved goodbye. I felt the love. And I felt everything else too.

Films by nature are meant to be engaging storytelling. I had a story to tell and for the first time I felt like pure still photography wasn’t going to be enough. When I am older (and probably less attractive) I wanted to be able to see myself just as I was on my wedding day: happy and gorgeous. I wanted to watch my grandparents all dressed up, trying not to get barbeque all over themselves. I wanted to hear the fountains again, see myself running away from Will as he tried to shove cake in my face, and see my parents simply beaming. I wanted to hear my vows again.

I ended up with Tower Films filming my wedding. Maranatha also married us because she is amazing and can be in 34723987 places at once. Choosing to invest in video was the best decision I made in my wedding planning process. You should invest in video because you have a story to tell. You want your relatives and friends who couldn’t make it to be able to immerse themselves in your best day. You want them to hear the big band and watch your first dance. You want to be able to look back with your spouse and think “We were so excited and everything was perfect.”

I invite you to watch one of ourĀ  videos below and see the power that videography has to completely recreate an event over and over. Of course I cried, I always cry at weddings.
